The beipiaosaurus lived during the early Cretaceous 125 million years ago.

Its first fossil has been found in China in the city of Beipiao (that’s where the name Beipiaosaurus come from, which means: “Beipiao lizard”) in 1996 by farmer Li Xiang. In May 1999 the Beipiaosaurus species was described by the paleontologist Xu Xing and his colleagues, who gave it the scientific name of Beipiaosaurus Inexpectus.

The beipiaosaurus lives in the lush forest full of trees and other types of plants, these were the its main food source.

The beipiaosaurus lived in small groups composed of some females, led by 1 adult male.

The claws that the beipiaosaurus had on the forelimbs were used exclusively to bring tree branches close to it and to reach the hanging leaves. However, these claws were also used as weapons to fight against predators: the beipiaosaurus was a prey of the yutirannus and dilong, 2 predatory dinosaurs of the Tyrannosaurid family.
